OpticWorld has developed through a family business from over 45 years of optical knowledge, in both wholesale and retail optics. Using professional staff and General Optical Council registered opticians to process each order taken, we hope to separate ourselves from other online opticians by reviewing all orders that are placed.

We pride ourselves on making each order as carefully and accurately as we would do if it was being taken in an optical practice. OpticWorld also use the same grade lenses that you would find in your high street opticians but for up to 70% off the price.

By supplying and buying optical frames for our website in large numbers throughout the year, we are able to offer greatly reduced prices to our customers for authentic designer eyewear, high quality standard optical frames, sunglasses, sportswear and all major branded contact lenses and accessories.

Why does my optician discourage me from buying glasses online?

Simple, they want to keep your business. However the world of optics has changed and more and more people are now seeing the difference in prices when buying online. We provide exactly the same services when it comes to providing prescription glasses, contact lenses and all optical products to suit your individual needs.

We have our own state of the art laboratory where we can complete every stage of the process. Also, our prices are up to 70% cheaper than high street opticians due to our low overhead costs and many companies don’t want to lose your custom to another who can provide what you’re looking for at such a low price.

How do you offer such low prices?

The world of optics has changed dramatically over the last few years and so have the prices of the majority of optical products. Most high-street opticians don’t have the ability to reduce their prices to the same level that we sell as they are supplying a smaller community. They rely on good profits from each order.

As we supply the whole of the UK and also internationally. We are happy to make smaller profits on each order allowing customers to get a much better deal on their products. Opticians work on very high profit margins and its time to offer competitive prices for the best optical products available.

Does the quality differ from the high street?

Absolutely not. There is no difference in either the quality or service of the products you purchase. We use the same distributors as all of the major optical retailers; we are simply able to offer lower prices and wider choice.

Can I buy designer glasses?

Yes, we sell a wide range of designer glasses and sunglasses and buy them in through the same channels that your high street opticians will buy them. Your high street opticians will stock around 500-800 frames for you to choose from, from budget to designer. We have over 8,000 frames available to you and our catalogue is growing daily.

Are your payment systems safe on the OpticWorld site?

Yes. We operate a 100% secure payment system through Paypal to ensure that all of your details are safe and secure. We will also be incorporating HSBC Online Payment gateway in the near future.


How do I get a prescription?

Following any eye test, your optician is legally obliged to provide you with a copy of your prescription. We strongly recommend that you ask your optician to provide as much detail as possible on the prescription including your pupillary distance measurement. Some opticians may be reluctant to give this measurement out to you and may charge you a nominal fee for this information but it will help in making your spectacles and would mean you would not need to take this measurement yourself.

What does my prescription all mean?

Prescriptions can seem confusing to understand. It may look like a mass of complicated numbers and digits, but when broken down, it really is quite simple. What is pupillary distance (PD) and do I need to know it before I order?

Pupillary distance is the measurement between the pupils of your eyes. It ensures that the positioning of your prescription lenses are made in line with the centre of your pupils.
If you don’t have a PD measurement this can be easily measured, using our downloadable PD Scale and by uploading a picture of your scale up against your face, we can calculate your PD just as if you were in an optical practice.

Are there any limits on the prescriptions you can cater for?

The OpticWorld website is different to any other, as our highly sophisticated software offers the full range of prescription powers specifically offered by each lens type manufacturer.
We will always advise you if our professional team feels you would benefit from a high index lens whether it be for cosmetic appearance / or optical improvements. We usually consider that any prescription greater than +/-4.00 often benefits from a higher index material.

Can you read my prescription from my existing glasses?

Yes. If you send your current frames to us, we will read the prescription from your current lenses. We charge £10 for this service and we will return your glasses to you with your new glasses you have chosen. If you use this method you must certify in writing that you have a written prescription that’s less than two years old. Please remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that your glasses reach us securely. We are not responsible for any items lost in the post.

Can I use my contact lens prescription to use when ordering my glasses?

Unfortunately not, the powers for contact lenses generally differ from those of your spectacles as one sits directly on the eye and the other a distance away from the eye. You will need a separate spectacle prescription for ordering your glasses.

Can I order glasses just for style without a prescription?

We can provide frames with non-prescription lenses (Plano) without a problem. All you need to do is select the ‘Plano’ option on your right and left lens powers after you’ve clicked the ‘Customise & Buy’ option on the page of the frames you want.

How can I be sure that the glasses you send me are fitted exactly to my prescription?

You can be guaranteed that any pair of glasses we send you will be fitted to your prescription in every respect and will follow all necessary British Standards of optical lens production that all opticians much adhere to. We have industry leading equipment in order to meet every aspect of your prescription and produce your bespoke glasses, sunglasses or sportswear.

What types of lenses do you provide?

We pride ourselves on the variety of lenses we offer. Unlike any other online optical site. We have developed a system whereby you can personally choose the type of lens that you require. For example, with Varifocals we give you options for different grades of lens clarity and thickness taking online ordering to the next level of customisation and using lenses from some of the worlds best lens manufacturers at a fraction of the high street price.

We also provide a variety of lens options beyond Single Vision, Bifocal and Varifocal. We offer photochromic, polarised and polycarbonate lenses as well as high index lenses from most major lens manufacturers.

How do I know what sort of lenses I need? Single Vision, Bifocals or Varifocals?

Each lens option offers different powers and suits different types of prescriptions.

• Single vision lenses are suitable for people needing glasses for distance only, computer only, or near vision only.
• Bifocal lenses are required by people who want the convenience of distance and reading powers in one lens. This encorperates a segment for the reading area.
• Varifocal lenses are similar to bifocal lenses, but without the visible segment seen on the bifocal and these also incorporate arms length clarity, great for computer use too..


What are high index lenses and do you provide them?

Yes we provide all high index lenses. High index lenses are thinner than standard lenses and are often chosen by those who have a high prescription to thin the overall appearance of the lens.

They are often lighter that standard plastic lenses, are more comfortable to wear and they improve the cosmetic appearance of the frame. High index lenses are also used in rimless frames as they provide superior strength (polycarbonate / trivex thinner lenses are unbreakable and impact resistant and are used in our glazed sportwear frames).


Do you offer UV protection on your lenses?

All our tinted lenses come with a full UV protection coating however we also have a UV coating on specialised lenses such as Polarised and Photochromatic Lenses.

• Photochromic Lenses – These lenses provide 100% UV protection and glare reduction as the lenses adapt to changing sunlight in order to reduce the inconvenience of carrying around an extra pair of prescriptions sunglasses. They are available for Single Vision, Bifocal and Varifocal lenses.

• Polarised Lenses – Polarised Lenses offer the maximum protection from reflective glare, UV rays and provided improved visual clarity, thereby providing enhanced ability to perceive contrast and improving depth of perfection.

What tints do you offer?

We offer a number of options for tinting your lenses, with varying depths of tint. From cosmetic light tints to dark tints designed for sunny days. The densities we offer are:

• 25% - used as a fashion tint or for an all-round tint for non-extreme light situations such as driving.
• 50% - for the majority of light conditions. Offers good comfort in bright conditions but not as good as a dark 75% tint, however is also comfy indoors or in lower light conditions. Not suitable for night driving…
• 75% - used for bright light situations, providing maximum protection from bright sunlight.
• We also offer contrast enhancement tints and medical tints for different medical conditions such as macular degeneration.
• All of our tint options are made with full UV protection.

All tinting options can be found when you are customising your prescription and order.

What lens coatings can I purchase?

We provide a range of different coatings from many of the major lens manufacturing companies, including Nikon’s HCC Ikon and Essilor’s Crizal coating.

• Anti-Scratch – This coating protects the lenses from everyday excessive scratching from dust, dirt and protection from the environment.
• Anti-Reflection (MAR) – This coating reduces glare and surface reflections making the lenses less visible to others. Front and back surface reflections can reduce the amount of light reaching the eyes so anti reflection coatings enhance vision in lower lighting levels and glare situations like driving.

What options are there in terms of frame styles?


We offer one of the widest choices in frame styles on the internet, and incorporate a fully refineable gallery to help find exactly the right frame for you, whether it be the latest style, colour, designer or just a cheap second pair of specs. We offer frames in Metals, Plastics, Titanium and Memory Metal. Full Rim, Supra and Rimless styles.

How do frame measurements work?

All frames are labelled with all available measurements to help you to make the right choice when getting the correct fit for your glasses. If you are happy with the fit of your current glasses you can check the sizes by looking at the inner side of the arm. You will find three measurements with a little square, for the frame diameter, bridge width and side length.

What if my glasses need adjusting?

If adjustments are needed they can be performed by any optically qualified person / practice. By popping into your local opticians most will be more than happy to make minor fitting alterations to make your glasses slightly tighter or looser. If you have any problems and one of our optical team will be happy to help.

Can I try the frames on before I buy them?

No, unfortunately we don’t offer a ‘try before you buy’ option. We offer such a huge range of frames we buy from the same manufacturers as your local opticians.

This means that we can’t offer a try before you buy as we buy frames to order.

Ordering and Payment

What do I need before ordering from you?

Before ordering from us, the main thing you will need is a valid prescription that is less than two years old. You will also need to know which frame you’re looking for and what lenses, tints and coatings you would like…

• You will need a valid prescription.
• Find the right frame for you from our wide selection of standard and designer frames and check to see if it’s suitable for your lens type.
• Select your frame colour and size.
• Choose your lens type, whether it be for distance, reading, bifocals or varifocals.
• Customise your glasses by adding additional lens options such as high index lenses or Transitions lenses.
• Enter your prescription and payment details.
• We will send you an email confirmation of your order.

How long before I receive my glasses?

Every pair of glasses we sell are custom made to fit each individual prescription exactly. It is for this reason that we ask you to allow at least 7-14 working days and in some cases up to 28 working days for completion of your order. You can track your order status in you’re My Account pages.

I made a mistake during ordering, what do I do?

If you have made a mistake at any stage of ordering get in touch with us as soon as possible as we start processing your order as soon as we receive it, and once the glasses have been glazed they cannot be altered.


Who checks my order to make sure it’s complete and correct?

Your order will be checked by a qualified optician to make sure that they are no problems. If there are any issue you will receive a call to clarify any queries we may have and once your order has been given the go ahead it will move through to the next stage of processing.

Do you accept NHS vouchers?

Yes, we accept valid NHS vouchers. Prior to sending the vouchers to us, please ensure that you have completed the declaration on the reverse of the voucher correctly. How do I pay?

We accept all major credit and debit cards, cheques, POs, NHS and Eyecare vouchers.

Is the payment page secure?

Yes, our payment page is 100% secure through Paypal, one of the worlds highest security payment processing systems available. We will also be introducing an HSBC payment gateway alongside Paypal in the near future.

Can I order by mail?

If you send us all the information regarding your order via post we can email you back with final prices and confirmation of your choices before we start your order.



How do you deliver?

We offer three delivery options; Second Class Recorded Delivery, First Class Packet Post Recorded, Special Delivery.

How much is delivery/postage and packing?

• Second Class Recorded Delivery - £3.50
• First Class Recorded Delivery - £4.00
• Special Next Day Delivery - £9.50

Do you deliver internationally?

Yes, we will deliver to you wherever you are, however some in some areas we have found that delivery is not guaranteed so please check your area for delivery options that would be best for us to guarantee you receive your item. Postage costs may vary from those stated and we will e-mail you if there are any differences in cost to get your glasses to you safely.

How do I track my order?

If your order is over £60 in value or you order by courier or special delivery, you will receive a confirmation email supplying you with an order tracking reference number. Simply follow the instructions in the email to track your order.

Returns and Refunds

What if I’m not satisfied with my purchase? What is your refund policy?
We have a comprehensive refund policy to ensure that we can deal with every aspect of customer service can be handled in a way best serving to the customer. In what circumstances will I receive a refund?

On the rare occasion that a product is faulty, it can be returned to us for an exchange or a full product refund. The product will need to be returned to us within 14 days of the delivery receipt date. The unworn product must be in its original condition and must have any frame attachments still in place and undamaged.

• We do not refund the following:
• Designer Products
• Prescription Lenses
• Sale Items
• Unused Contact Lenses

These products are non-refundable unless stated otherwise at the time of sale, but if returned within 7 days of you receiving them they may possibly be exchanged for a product of the same value.

In the unlikely event, you have ordered contact lenses and they have been received with different powers to those ordered, or are the wrong lens type to those ordered. We would ask that you contact us first to discuss your concern. We will probably ask that these be returned to us for validation. We will re-send the correct lenses to you and would refund you for any costs incurred in sending the lenses back to us.

What if the prescription in the glasses is incorrect when I receive them?

If the prescription in your glasses is incorrect you MUST supply a photocopy of your current prescription with the returned item. We will not accept returned without this prescription photocopy. All spectacles are checked prior to dispatch to make sure they conform with British Standards.

How long will my refund take?

If you request a refund for any reason we will process it immediately. The arrival of the money back into your account will depend entirely on your bank’s clearing times. We ask you to allow 7-14 working days for clearance into your bank.

How do I return my glasses to you? What happens next?

We ask that you read our Terms and Conditions before returning any products to us. If your glasses are faulty they can be returned to us within 14 days of the delivery receipt date.
